Thankful and Thoughtful: Tackling Sensitive Topics During the Holidays

Our country is divided and so are our kitchen tables, living rooms, and group chats. How should followers of Jesus engage – especially when there is so much division, fear, and mistrust. In all circumstances, we want to be people who are centered on God's love, kindness and justice. So how do we do that as we head home for the holidays, show up in meetings with classmates and colleagues, and go about our every day lives where conflict seems right around every corner and so much strife right under the surface?

Let's talk about it with pastor and author, Caleb Campbell who wrote "Disarming Leviathan" (IVP 2020) and leads Desert Springs Bible Church in Phoenix, AZ. Caleb offers practical tools and resources for people seeking to reach Christian Nationalists with the hope-filled message of the gospel of Jesus in their communities, churches, and families. The first 25 people to REGISTER and ATTEND will receive a free copy of Disarming Leviathan: Loving Your Christian Nationalist Neighbor.

He will be joined by Jonathan Walton and Connie Anderson. Jonathan is the author of Twelve Lies that Hold America Captive (IVP 2019), creator of the Emotionally Healthy Activist Course and Senior Resource Specialist on Political Discipleship. Connie is the creator of the Quick to Listen Course, former Abolitionist Plunge Director and InterVarsity Leadership Institute Fellow. Our time will include an interview, interactive training, prayer and Q&A. We look forward to seeing you there! If you have questions, please email jonathan.walton@intervarsity.org.

**Intervarsity Only** | God's Good News About Politics Open Coaching Session 5

Friends! Our Bible Study and discussion guide, “God’s Good News About Politics” is OUT! Download it here. To encourage and empower you along the way, we are offering coaching sessions weekly!

Also, if these times don’t work, email: jonathan.walton@intervarsity.org and we’ll make something else work.

RSVP HERE! We look forward to speaking with you.

***NOTE***: This even is for InterVarsity Staff, students, and volunteers only.

Just a reminder, this series is NOT:

We are NOT telling anyone how to vote. We are not giving anyone a "Christian voter's guide."

We do NOT expect everyone in InterVarsity to think alike or vote the same way.

We're also NOT avoiding this topic because it's uncomfortable.

Here's what it IS:

We DO believe that following Jesus extends into every area of life, and we want to have Scripture-informed conversations about what it might mean to follow Jesus in this area. When the early disciples declared "Jesus is Lord," it was a political statement, not just a theological one. The coming of the Messiah was fused with political implications for the Jewish people and the Roman Empire, and this is also true for us in the United States.

We believe the gospel is good news for every area of life, including our politics.

This five-session Small Group series explores how God's people have historically engaged with power, justice, and political organization. The Orientation provides a framework for understanding political engagement and sets the stage for the studies. Each session follows a consistent structure: opening question, story, Scripture study, challenge, and closing. Optional "Beyond the Text" sections are designed to engage our current time.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out and join the sessions! Email jonathan.walton@intervarsity.org with any questions.

Prayers for the Election: Praying for Our Political Enemies

Prayers for the Election: Praying for Our Political Enemies

In today’s politics, people on every side have concluded that their opponents are not well-meaning, patriotic Americans who simply disagree with them about the best policies for the future. Instead, each side cites significant reasons to believe that their opponents are knowingly or unknowingly participating in truly evil schemes that are actively harming innocent people and will lead to the destruction of everything we hold dear in our country. Loving our enemies is utterly impossible apart from God’s Spirit. But because He commanded us to do this, we can be confident that he also will enable us to do it.

During this 30 minute guided prayer time, we will seek God together. Check out the resources we’ll be using here.

Prayers for the Election: Even if My Greatest Hopes Come True

Prayers for the Election: Even if My Greatest Hopes Come True

When life goes the way we hoped and prayed, we rejoice! We thank the Lord for answering our prayers, and we celebrate the anticipation of a better future. We feel a great sense of relief, and we want to be with others who share our joy. That’s good! Scripture is also filled with cautionary tales about putting our hopes in people fallen humans. Often, when we are in positions of power and influence, we become less sensitive to God's Spirit. Our hearts can become dismissive, numb, or even cold toward those with whom we don’t agree, associate, or identify. Scripture gives us a different approach.

We can hold political victory with humility, recognizing that even the best political leaders are limited in their wisdom and impact. We can ground ourselves in Christ and follow the way of Jesus as outlined in the Sermon on the Mount.

During this 30 minute guided prayer time, we will seek God together. Check out the resources we’ll be using here.

Prayers for the Election: Even If My Greatest Fears Are Realized

Prayers for the Election: Even If My Greatest Fears Are Realized

Many of us try to calm our fears by dismissing worst case scenarios as highly unlikely. We say things like, “I don’t have to be afraid of flying because plane crashes are extremely rare.” That might help, but then we’re reminded that sometimes planes do crash, and the anxiety comes rushing forward again. We try to push back fear through logic, but anxious thoughts are not easily stopped. This is especially true with the influence of social media, the news cycle, and our anxious, fractured culture. Scripture gives us a different approach. We can pray “Even If” prayers to ground ourselves in Christ and trust that He holds all things together and we will not be overcome.

During this 30 minute guided prayer time, we will seek God together. Check out the resources we’ll be using here.

This unique, full-day virtual event is dedicated to moving nonprofit folks forward on their ethical storytelling and fundraising journeys. We will have five expert speakers and I am one of them! i will be talking about interrogating the motivations behind our fundraising, advocacy and community work so that we don’t exploit those we hope to serve. They must be centered and elevated, not our giving campaigns.

We will also have one panel session, plus morning and afternoon networking roundtables. Every expert is bringing their best tools and strategies so that nonprofits will be equipped to ethically elevate their fundraising and storytelling activities.

We are infusing community participation at every level so that folks will leave the conference with the tools and support network they need to make change happen. Click here for more information!

Workshop: What is God's Good News About Politics?

  • Congregational Church of South Hempstead (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ is always Good News to all people in all situations – this includes politics. When the disciples declared “Jesus is Lord,” this was a political statement, not just a theological one. The coming of the Messiah was fused with political implications for the Jewish people and the Roman Empire, and it is true for us in the United States. So what does it look like to say Jesus is Lord – not a politician, pundit, party or platform – and live that out faithfully. We will talk about it, invite you to take a concrete step, and join a small group bible study.

  • Immediate step: "Confession" that Jesus is Lord alongside Christians all over the world. (website and details coming)

  • Long-term step: Join or lead a small group and go through our 5-part discussion series this fall. They can also sign up to be informed of weekly coaching sessions via Zoom to help them out!

All are welcome, especially Small Group leaders and those interested in leading faithful discussions this fall around politics, our faith and the state of our country.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email jonathan.walton@intervarsity.org.

Justice Starts At The Root: Making Concrete Connections to Systemic Change

How do we better connect our individual convictions to the institutional and ideological efforts? And then how can we communicate those beliefs and actions in a way that motivates the moderates, makes extremists curious, and inspires collaborators to keep at it?

4 out of the 5 largest protests in the United States have happened in the last 7 years. MeToo, Time’s Up push back patriarchy and sexual violence, Black Lives Matter and the Movement for Black Lives push back against racism, white supremacy and police brutality. The March for Our Lives says "no" to the normalization of mass shootings. Progress feels possible but years later we have seen affirmative action overturned and DEI initiatives abandoned, gun rights have expanded and the AR-15 is the most popular rifle in America, and sexual violence against persists at levels that are not going down. Something is missing and we can fill in the blanks.

RSVP HERE & join CEO of Justice Informed, Xavier Ramey and CEO of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, Jennifer Jones Austin for an honest, personal, and thoughtful conversation.

Workshop: “Transforming Donors Into Partners for Non-Profit Pros with Busy Schedules”

In a busy, digital world, maintaining genuine relationships with donors is tough. Non-profits often focus only on financial contributions, overlooking those who can't give money. How can we value all supporters and create meaningful ways for everyone to contribute?

I hope to break down how to budget your time effectively, ensuring you can transform donors into partners without burning yourself out. We use a funnel strategy to guide people through clear, intentional steps of involvement, from being passive observers in the CROWD to ADVOCATES who support and share your work. RSVP NOW!

Register here for the Non-Profit Marketing Summer: Community Rising and make sure to attend my seminar, “Transforming Donors Into Partners for Non-Profit Pros with Busy Schedules”.

Actively Loving Both Palestinians and Israelis

**INTERVARSITY STAFF ONLY**

I don’t know about you but the genocide in Gaza and the magnitude of suffering can feel overwhelming. It is helpful to talk with people who have been engaged in a journey that I lack the deep knowledge and expertise on. So we will do just that in a conversation with Mercy Aiken from Network of Evangelicals for the Middle East.

How can Christians in the U.S. actively love both Palestinians and Israelis, now and in the years ahead, and how can they encourage other Christians to do so? Let’s talk about it! Click here to RSVP.

*Note: this event is a private event for InterVarsity staff so if you would like to attend, please email jonathan.walton@intervarsity.org.

Bible Study | The Christmas Story (Luke 2:1-38)

Have you ever considered what Mary might have been feeling when she had to tell Joseph she was pregnant and what it meant for her in her social and political context? What about Joseph’s perspective as her husband to be? The layers are many! The Christmas Story is beautiful, amazing, famous and admittedly a little too familiar. Luke 2:1-38 has so much more in it than I remember from Sunday School. So we will look at this text together in community specifically examining about the emotional and social context of all those involved as well as what emotions the text invokes for us in our current social and political moment.

We believe that God speaks through His Word and we can hear from Him. Studying scripture in community and responding individually and corporately is a sign of spiritual growth and maturity. We also believe that our emotional maturity and our spiritual maturity are inextricably linked. So, our growth in emotional awareness and intelligence is essential to our growth as a follower of Jesus.

So, join us on December 15 at 12:00PM EST for an emotionally aware, institutionally engaged time with scripture because God still speaks and we are ready to hear from Him. See you there!

Debriefing Well in Crisis and Conflict

Slowing down to reflect on the things that happen every day is important so that we are able to truly connect with ourselves, God, and one another. Leaders are often called upon to help groups or individuals do that in a way that leads towards growth in a certain direction or shared goal or outcome. LEAPT, which stands for Listen, Empathize, Affirm, Point and Transition, is one way to shepherd someone or a group of people in conflict when there are time constraints, or if a structure is less flexible and a conflict arises that needs to be addressed. CLICK HERE TO RSVP!

These monthly Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Workshops will be on the first Tuesday of every month at 12pm EST via Zoom. Each 75-minute experience will feature a space for orientation and training. Moreover, there will be opportunities for follow up and Q&A two weeks later. Patreon subscribers will have access to the videos and one-on-one trainings will be available upon request. You can subscribe to Patreon OR request a one-on-one or special group session here.

COST: These workshops are FREE! But if you would like to support our work, please donate $25 OR a subscribe on Patreon subscription at $1.25/month.

If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please don’t hesitate to reach out! Email jonathan.walton@intervarsity.org.
